WEST: Palette Pleaser

COMMENT: Just days before the official launch of Telstra Perth Fashion Festival, Myer flew Kris Smith in for their inaugural fashion runway. Arriving at the event, which took place on Myer Perth’s third floor, I was greeted with a massive queue of woman spilling out onto Forrest Chase. Clearly most were here to see the man himself, which was apparent based on the sheer glee that spread across their faces as he arrived at the media wall (my personal preference would be Jen Hawkins, but hey, he’s obviously a drawcard!). Myer filled the runway with all of the spring/summer trends including gingham, denim on denim and sequins. From the blooms to the champagne tower, it doesn’t get more palette pleasing than this.

COMMENT: Don’t get us wrong, JLO has spent all summer long looking fresh-to-death with A-Rod, but there’s no mistaking that her heyday was circa Diddy. The gold, the gold, the gold- they were both dripping in it. From the hoops to the chains, they gave heavy metal new meaning…

The layers of gold have made a resurgence, with various lengths added to any outfit to create that Diddy effect- but with a slightly modernised edge. Yellow gold is currently huge and looks best with a personalised pendant or two. Gemstones are a crucial element in making this look your own and can be pulled into the look through earrings, rings or within the pendants.

Rubies, sapphires, onyx and emeralds are only a few to choose from, each with their own unique meanings. These colourful gemstones hold their own when mixed with the layers of gold- the colours may compliment an outfit but the meanings behind the stones are a significant factor to consider. Without getting all too deep and meaningful on you, emeralds are known for love and compassion while rubies signify courage and passion (oh, and will forever remind us of Jafar’s antics in Aladdin’s crazy cave of wonder). The focus that is said to come from sapphires will surely help you style the rest of your outfit around all of the gold chains and gemstones.

Layering the chains is an art in itself- you need them at varying lengths to make this look JLO-esque. Kendall and crew made chokers a huge trend of 2016 and they’re here to stay for a while longer yet with the chain resurgence of 2017 taking them to new heights. Outfit selection is the easy part to achieve this look- whether you throw on jeans and a simple silk cami, or choose a covered mesh bodysuit for them to sit above, the key to styling this is a neckline that emphasises the chains and gemstones. Whether it’s sticking to one coloured gemstone or mixing it up to a rainbow effect, there’s no wrong way to incorporate them. Throwing on a chunky men’s ring (or two) an easy way to Diddy-up this look. Hello LA!

COMMENT: They chose a good year to drop the ‘Spring’ from Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Night Two of MFW involved heavy rain and freezing cold temps, but alas, we still wore new season. In true Melbourne style (that is, I like to think, quite accepting and open-minded), Runway Two finished with a political statement in favour of the ‘Yes’ vote – we all know what for. Highlights of the night for me were Jason Grech and Nevenka (as always) as well as a couple of stand-outs from Ginger and Smart.

COMMENT: Melbourne Fashion Week kicked off last night and it quite literally shut down the city. You know you’re attending a real ‘event’ when you can’t catch a cab close enough because so many surrounding streets have been shut down to set up the runway. On Little Bourke, between Emporium and Myer and lit with Neon lights covered in flowers we took our first look at Spring Fashion. Stand outs included new Manning Cartell (love me some leopard print), Alice McCall (hippy vibes) and Dion Lee (lace ups galore).

EAST: MFW Dinner with Lulu

LOCATION: QT Hotel, Melbourne.
STYLE: Dress; By Johnny. T-shirt; Maje (available in store at David Jones). Earrings: Lulu Frost.
COMMENT: Melbourne Fashion Week is easily one of my favourite events of the year. It’s the first sign that Spring is around the corner and the perfect opportunity to sit back and check out what I want to wear to Spring Racing as someone a lot hotter and younger than me presents it to me on a runway. This year we kicked off the ‘Week’ with an intimate dinner at QT Melbourne which included some of my fave Melburnians.

I was thrilled to be able to wear a dress again (my legs weren’t as excited) and opted for this new season By Johnny, but if I’m honest I built the whole outfit around the earrings.

I am a long time fan of NYC jewellery designer Lulu Frost. They’re my go-to for good jewellery when I have a special event and have recently become available in Australia at David Jones. If you’ve got a big event coming up or just want some new pieces for Spring, order them online here and use the code ‘stateoflulufrost’ for free shipping on purchases over $350USD/$445AUD.
